Love in Idleness

I had absolutely no idea what to expect from this production and, contrary to most other reviews, I absolutely loved it. If you have seen Flare Path or The Browning Version you may not be able to recognise this production as being a Rattigan, as it does not conform to the usual Rattigan features, although there are definite Rattigan elements.

Eve Best is fantastic, as always, and she really carries the show and holds it together. I want her pyjamas and dressing gown and slippers from the first scene - they portray the ideal wafting Saturday morning. Anthony Head feels a little awkward at first, and his English/Canadian accent is confused and clunky, although when you realise that his character is Canadian then it sits a little better. He really grows into the role though, and by the final scene you believe in him and Best’s Olivia, and you are wholeheartedly backing him and for love to conquer all. Edward Bluemel as Michael Brown is wonderfully awful. His portrayal is absolutely hateful and a petulant brat, and makes you feel as though you want to slap him. Helen George is waif-like and perfect as Head’s ex-wife.

This was a brilliant production and wonderfully enjoyable and, in my opinion, deservedly sold out.
